Thisisnotashop is closing Benburb Street Gallery
Published December 4, 2009
THISISNOTASHOP is sorry to say…. we’re closing the gallery!
After four years, Thisisnotashop is regretfully closing its gallery space at 26 Benburb Street. Since opening at the beginning of 2006, we have held 80 exhibitions/events and, including group shows, have had the work of over 175 artists grace our space.
However Thisisnotashop as an entity is not going anywhere!
We are going to continue creating exhibitions in both Ireland and New York City in various independent venues as well as maintain our Writing Workshop which is scheduled to present work at P.S.1 Contemporary Arts Center in Queens, NY, in February 2010. Our website, http://www.thisisnotashop.com, will become the base of our operation providing information about the various exhibitions and events on both sides of the Atlantic. So rather than mourning the end of the Benburb Street space we’re celebrating all we’ve have done here as well as the next phase of Thisisnotashop and its expanded potential for our artists and audience.

We have consistently strived to create a high quality program of both Irish and International emerging artists while maintaining an open friendly atmosphere so as to be a welcoming meeting space for both artists and audience. In addition to our support of emerging artists we have also held special exhibition/events that brought seminal contemporary art influences to Ireland for the first time: the first solo exhibition in Ireland of Gordon Matta-Clark entitled Food in December of 2007 and Fluxus with Larry Miller in May 2009 consisting of an exhibition of Fluxus artist Larry Miller and the first Fluxus Concert to ever be held in Dublin. In June of 2009 we were invited to participate in No Soul For Sale: A Festival of Independents held at X-Initiative in Chelsea, New York City, where Thisisnotashop represented the independent Irish art community exhibiting alongside 30 other not for profit art galleries/organizations from around the world. We have been written about in The New York Times, Art Review Magazine, The Irish Times and Circa among others. It’s been an incredible run for this little gallery.
